Painful diseases of the spine
The research areas of the Vigdis Thompson Foundation

The Vigdis Thompson Foundation researches, publishes, consults and provides information on diseases of the central nervous system. The specific focus of our foundation is on chronic pain conditions of the spinal column and the development of modern therapies to treat them. While the foundation’s origins are inextricably linked to the rare diseases of arachnoiditis and Tarlov cysts, the Vigdis Thompson Foundation expanded its activities to include another field of research in the summer of 2024. With neuromuscular dysfunction of the deep back muscles as a cause of chronic back pain, it is now also dedicated to researching and treating another frequently misdiagnosed disease of the spine. Below you will find an overview of the two main areas of research and we invite you to find out more about the respective fields of research.

As of September 2024, more than 400 international patients from all over the world have been successfully accompanied and supported on their treatment journey in recent years, with almost 1,000 more from Germany. On behalf of our patients, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters. The incredible outpouring of support over the years has made our work possible and enabled us to continue to make a real difference to the lives of those affected. We would therefore be delighted if you would also find out more about how you can support our foundation!

Arachnoiditis & Tarlov Cysts

Arachnoiditis is a rare but serious inflammation of the soft membranes of the spinal cord, which can lead to considerable pain and mobility restrictions. Tarlov cysts are fluid-filled cysts that often develop in association with arachnoiditis and can also lead to symptoms. Our research is focused on improving diagnosis and developing effective treatments for those affected. Find out more about arachnoiditis and Tarlov cysts on the detailed subpages, including topics relating to symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, patient reports, publications and the possibility of a free and no-obligation consultation request.

Chronic back pain due to neuromuscular dysfunction

Chronic back pain affects millions of people worldwide and is often caused by neuromuscular dysfunction. In particular, impaired control of the multifidus muscle can lead to significant impairments in quality of life. Our research aims to better understand the mechanisms of these dysfunctions and to develop innovative therapies that provide lasting relief. Discover more about the causes and treatment options for chronic back pain on our dedicated website.
